This is the first of a series of articles about alcohol and other drug issues which will appear in Express over the coming months. They won’t be all doomy and gloomy because, after all, not everyone hits the skids with their substance use - but some do. The ideal is to have informed choice so you can enjoy without too many hassles. Failing that, we at CADS are experts at working with people whose alcohol and drug use is more problematic and less fun than it used to be.
Now, as most queers are up with the play and have access to snazzy computers we thought we should introduce some useful web-sites to you so you can surf at your leisure for either your own information or if you are concerned about a friend.
For people living in Auckland there is www.cads.org.nz which shows the range of services we offer, how we offer them, and where. Much of our work is done with people who love someone with substance use difficulties, so don’t think what we do is only with the user themselves. This website also has an informative ‘safer partying drug information guide – sorted2’.
The other Auckland web-site www.cadsonline.org.nz is the gateway to an online alcohol and drug counselling group. For many in the gay community access to groups or organisations can be scary because of the fear of prejudice, rejection or being misunderstood. This service allows you to avoid those fears. It is anonymous and allows you to remain in control of what people know about you, while getting support and insight from the other members of the group. And all from the privacy of your own home!
To find out about what is available outside Auckland you can visit www.druginfo.org.nz. Or phone the Alcohol and Drug Helpline 0800 787 797.
We are always open to feedback or suggestions for future articles - so please send it to us via our website www.cads.org.nz or tell us by phoning 845 1818. We are particularly responsive to flattery…. See you at the Big Gay Out!
